“I urge you, first of
all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf,
and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority
so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity." 1 Timothy 2:1–2 (NLT)
REFLECTION
As a kid growing up in Puerto Rico, I never thought much about the Fourth of
July. I looked forward to it because I loved being with family at the beach,
eating good food, and lighting firecrackers. Still, I never stopped to consider
why we celebrated. Now, as an adult, I have a new appreciation for this day. It
is my chance to say thank you to the men and women throughout our history who
sacrificed their lives for the freedom we enjoy, and a chance to praise God for
allowing us to live in such a great country. I love this country. I served her
in the Navy for twenty-three years, and I would die for her. But because I love
her, it is that much harder to watch the choices our culture has made—turning
from God, justifying sin, and calling it no big deal—all in the name of
freedom.
Here is the honest truth: apart from Christ, no one is truly free. We are born in sin, and we live in sin. We don't naturally choose
God; we run from Him. But what I celebrate—not just on July 4th, but every
single day—is that there is a way to experience real, unhindered, life-changing
freedom. Christ died to set us free. He sets us free from the world's corrupt
idea of freedom, free from our guilt, our past, and our mistakes. The world
will never let you forget and refuses to forgive. Still, when we call on the
name of Christ and repent, we finally experience a freedom that no constitution
or bill of rights can ever give.
So what can you and I possibly do to help change a nation that has drifted so far from where it began 250 years ago? In 1 Timothy 2, Paul tells us where restoration begins: on our knees. Prayer is the most powerful gift God has given us—a direct link between you and the God of the universe. He is big, He is powerful, and He has a whole world to run, yet He loves you so much that when you pray, He takes time to listen. Samuel Chadwick said the devil fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, and prayerless religion—but he trembles when we pray. America needs Jesus, and if we want to see God move in this country, His people must first humble themselves, get on their knees, and pray.
APPLICATION
This Independence Day, before the
fireworks begin, set aside time to pray unceasingly. Pray for our country and
its leaders. Pray for your church, for the lost, and for the men and women
serving on the battlefield. Husbands and wives, get on your knees for one
another. Then look for one opportunity this week to tell someone about the
freedom found only in Jesus. Don't wait for a quiet moment—pray while you
drive, while you fold laundry, before you sleep. "Never stop praying"
(1 Thessalonians 5:17).
CLOSING
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for the country
I live in and for every freedom I enjoy—freedom of speech, freedom of worship,
and the laws that protect us. But most of all, thank You for the freedom I have
in Christ. Thank You that I am no longer a slave to sin but a servant of Jesus.
Forgive us, Lord, as a nation, and as Your church, for the times we have turned
our backs on You and called sin no big deal. Make me a person of unceasing
prayer. I lift up our leaders, our military, our churches, and the lost all
around me. Use me to point others to the real freedom that only Your Son can
give. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
